The Death Game

The setting of this novel is Dundee in 1919, and it was inspired by Mrs Thomson, one of the first Scottish policewomen (there were only three in Scotland at this time) who worked with Dundee Police. However the main character, Kirsty Campbell, is not intended to represent Mrs Thomson.

Kirsty Campbell, aged 29 years, rebelled against her middle class family ten years previously and ran away from home to become part of the suffragette movement. She joined the Women’s Police Volunteers in 1914 and subsequently became a member of the Metropolitan Women’s Police Patrols. She is sent to Dundee to be their first policewoman but on her arrival is dismayed to discover that her appointment is that of a Statement Taker. The resentment she feels about this leads her into conflict with her superior officer, Police Inspector Jamie Brewster, and impacts on her fight to be recognised as a policewoman.

She becomes embroiled in a murder investigation with ritualistic undertones but clashes with her supervising officer, who has instructed her to concentrate on more minor tasks and leave the investigation to him. This further antagonises Kirsty and she looks for support from the warden of a Children's Shelter who is sympathetic to her problems with the Dundee Police Force.
